Canadian
Pony Club Activities and Competitions
Competitive
opportunities exist at the local branch, regional, national, and international
levels. These competitions are designed to foster a strong team environment,
allow individuals to challenge their abilities and develop friendships
with Pony Clubbers from across Canada and around the world.
Prince
Philip Games is a series of mounted games played in teams.
The "Official" Games are for riders 15 years of age and under
riding ponies (not horses). Some Regions provide a Masters Division
for older members. Games are played in most Regions, there is a National
Games Championship, and an International competition.
Tetrathlon is an extremely challenging 4 phase competition involving swimming,
running, riding, and shooting. Most but not all Regions are active in
Tetrathlon and both National and International competitions are held.
Rallies are competitions which combine the elegance of dressage, the precision
of show jumping and the challenge of cross country with the practical
knowledge of stable management. The format of a rally is such that participants
must possess both sound riding skills and strong practical knowledge.
All Regions are active in Rallies and competitions are also held at
the National and International levels.
Show
Jumping tests a rider's ability to combine speed with accuracy
over a stadium course comprised of knockdown jumps. This is a very popular
discipline with competition at the local and regional levels.
Dressage means conditioning of the horse's mind, timing his responses giving
the impression that horse and rider are a pair working as one.
It is the foundation from which all of the riding disciplines within
Pony Clubs evolve. Most regions participate in Dressage and there are
National awards based on scores from Regional competitions. There are
no International Pony Club dressage competitions.
Quiz is staged to test a Pony Clubber's theoretical knowledge of horsemanship
including horse care, stable management, and various Pony Club activities.
Regional Quiz competitions qualify pony club members to participate
in the annual National Quiz. Thee is no International Quiz competitions.
